Back Tracking
Back Tracking is an engaging icebreaker that sparks curiosity and encourages interaction by having participants guess a question pinned to their back based on answers they receive from others. This activity fosters analytical thinking and memorable moments of discovery.
Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to encourage interaction, build rapport, and stimulate curiosity among participants who may not know each other well.
Solves: Lack of engagement in initial icebreakers, superficial introductions, reluctance to interact with unfamiliar colleagues.
- 1
Step 1: Prepare question cards in advance, one per participant. (15 minutes)
- 2
Step 2: Randomly attach one question card to the back of each person, ensuring they cannot see it. (5 minutes)
- 3
Step 3: Distribute a blank answer sheet and pen to each participant. (2 minutes)
- 4
Step 4: Instruct participants to mingle and ask others to answer the question on their back, recording the responses. Aim for at least 10 interactions per person. (20 minutes)
- 5
Step 5: After the mingling period, have each person read some of the responses they received and guess the question on their back. (15 minutes)
- 6
Step 6: Reveal the actual question and celebrate the predictions, regardless of accuracy. (5 minutes)
- Encourage participants to provide thoughtful and varied answers to the questions.
- Monitor the room to ensure everyone is actively participating and interacting.
- Use different categories of questions (e.g., professional experiences, personal preferences).
- Allow participants to create their own questions for others to guess.
