Bodystorming
Bodystorming is a dynamic brainstorming technique where participants physically simulate experiences to generate ideas and uncover potential issues. By embodying the user and interacting with the environment, teams gain a deeper understanding of the problem and spark innovative solutions.
Use Bodystorming when you need to move beyond abstract discussions and gain a more visceral understanding of a user's experience. It's particularly useful for designing physical spaces, service interactions, or product prototypes.
Solves: Lack of empathy for the user, abstract discussions that don't translate to real-world solutions, difficulty generating novel ideas.
- 1
Step 1: **Go Observe (20 mins):** Visit the environment relevant to the problem. Instruct participants to blend in and observe without specific analysis, noting details and cues.
- 2
Step 2: **Try It Out (40 mins):** Assign roles (user, environment, objects) and improvise the experience. Encourage participants to physically act out scenarios, testing existing ideas and uncovering new ones. Use 'Yes, and...' to build on each other's inputs.
- 3
Step 3: **Reflect (20 mins):** Discuss what happened during the enactment. Document key points, flaws, and assumptions. Consider recording the session for later review.
- Encourage participants to fully commit to their roles and embrace improvisation.
- Ensure the environment is safe and conducive to physical activity.
- Debrief thoroughly to capture all insights and potential solutions.
- Use pre-written scripts for more structured role-playing.
- Focus on specific aspects of the experience to narrow the scope.
- Incorporate user feedback by inviting real users to participate in the bodystorming session.
