Camera On/Off (Virtual Step-In)
A visual polling technique where participants reveal themselves by turning their cameras on or off in response to specific prompts. It creates a dynamic, high-impact visual representation of the group's shared experiences and diversity.
To quickly build group awareness and empathy without the time required for individual introductions.
Solves: Low engagement and the 'invisible' feeling often present in large-scale virtual meetings.
- 1
Step 1: Ask everyone to turn their cameras off (1 minute).
- 2
Step 2: Read a statement starting with 'Turn your camera on if...' (e.g., '...you have worked here for over 5 years') (30 seconds).
- 3
Step 3: Allow the group to look at the gallery view to see who is 'in the circle' before resetting for the next prompt (5-8 minutes).
- Start with light, fun prompts before moving to more meaningful or work-related ones.
- Invite a participant to suggest the final prompt to increase agency.
- Use 'Step into the Circle' for in-person groups.
- Use 'Cover the lens with your thumb' if people find turning cameras on/off too slow.
