Check-in / Check-out
Check-in/Check-out is a simple yet powerful method to start and end meetings or workshops by inviting each participant to share a feeling, reflection, or intention. This practice fosters presence, focus, and a sense of closure, enhancing group cohesion and individual well-being.
Use this method at the beginning of a meeting to set the tone and encourage active participation, or at the end to consolidate learning and provide a sense of completion.
Solves: Lack of focus at the start of meetings; unresolved feelings or thoughts lingering after a session.
- 1
Step 1: (2 min) Explain the purpose of the check-in/check-out and the ground rules for sharing (e.g., be concise, listen respectfully).
- 2
Step 2: (3-25 min) Invite each participant to respond to a specific prompt related to the session's goals or their current state. Go around the circle or call on individuals.
- 3
Step 3: (Ongoing) Actively listen to each participant's contribution without interruption or judgment.
- 4
Step 4: (Optional - 1 min) Briefly summarize key themes or insights that emerged during the check-in/check-out.
- Prepare a few different check-in/check-out prompts in advance to suit the group and session goals.
- Be mindful of time and gently guide participants to be concise.
- Model vulnerability by sharing your own check-in/check-out response first.
- Use visual prompts (images, objects) instead of verbal prompts.
- Incorporate a brief mindfulness exercise before the check-in.
- Allow participants to pass if they are not comfortable sharing.
