Count Up
A group challenge where participants must count from 1 to 20 collectively. The catch is that only one person can speak at a time, and there is no set order; if two people speak simultaneously, the group starts over.
5-10 min5-20 peopleEasy
When to Use
To build group awareness, improve listening skills, and demonstrate the importance of 'space' in conversation.
How It Works
Solves: Participants talking over each other or a lack of conversational 'rhythm' in virtual meetings.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
- 1
Step 1: Explain the rules: Count to 20, no speaking order, no two people at once (1 min).
- 2
Step 2: Begin the count. If a 'collision' occurs, the facilitator calls 'Reset' (5-8 mins).
- 3
Step 3: Once 20 is reached (or time is up), debrief the strategies used to succeed (2 mins).
Facilitator Tips
- Don't let the group get frustrated; remind them that the 'failure' is the point of the exercise.
- Watch for 'cheating' (e.g., using the chat or hand signals).
Variations
- Eyes Closed: Have everyone close their eyes to heighten their auditory focus.
