Deep Listening
Deep Listening cultivates empathy and understanding within a group by providing a structured approach to active listening and personal storytelling. It helps participants build trust and uncover new possibilities by creating a safe space for open expression.
Use this method when you want to foster deeper connections within a team, improve communication skills, or address underlying tensions by creating a space for vulnerability and understanding.
Solves: Lack of empathy, poor communication, unresolved conflict, superficial interactions
- 1
Step 1: Introduce Deep Listening (3 mins). Explain the principles of active listening without judgment or the need to fix problems. Emphasize understanding and empathy.
- 2
Step 2: Paired Story Sharing (7 mins). Divide participants into pairs. One person shares a personal story about a time they felt unheard, unseen, or disrespected. The listener asks open-ended questions like 'What else?' or 'What happened next?'
- 3
Step 3: Share Experiences (5 mins). Each person reflects on their experience as both the speaker and the listener. Encourage them to share their emotions, thoughts, and reactions.
- 4
Step 4: Switch Roles (7 mins). The listener becomes the speaker and shares their story. The new listener provides the same level of support and uses open-ended questions.
- 5
Step 5: Group Reflection (5 mins). Facilitate a group discussion where participants share their insights and learnings. Encourage them to build upon each other's ideas and identify common themes.
- Create a safe and inclusive environment by emphasizing confidentiality and respect.
- Encourage participants to be vulnerable and share authentically.
- Remind listeners to focus on understanding rather than offering advice or solutions.
- Use different prompts for story sharing, such as a time they felt valued or supported.
- Extend the sharing time to allow for deeper exploration.
- Incorporate mindfulness exercises to enhance presence and focus during listening.
