When to Use

Use this method when you need to provide feedback that is both direct and empathetic, aiming to improve performance or address specific behaviors in a way that motivates positive change.

How It Works

Solves: Defensive reactions to feedback, vague or unhelpful feedback, lack of clarity on impact and desired changes.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Describe the context (2 minutes). Set the stage by explaining the situation surrounding your feedback.

  2. 2

Step 2: List your observations (5 minutes). Provide specific, factual examples of the behavior or situation you're addressing, avoiding judgment.

  3. 3

Step 3: Express your emotions (3 minutes). Share how the situation made you feel, focusing on your personal experience rather than blaming the other person.

  4. 4

Step 4: Sort by value (5 minutes). Explain why the issue is important to you and what your needs are in this situation.

  5. 5

Step 5: End with suggestions (5 minutes). Offer one or two concrete suggestions for how the person can improve or address the issue.

  6. 6

Step 6: Open the floor for discussion (5-10 minutes). Allow the recipient to ask clarifying questions and engage in a dialogue to ensure mutual understanding.

Facilitator Tips
  • Encourage participants to be specific and avoid generalizations.
  • Remind participants to focus on their own feelings and needs, rather than blaming others.
Variations
  • Use a 'start, stop, continue' format for the suggestions step.
  • Adapt the steps into a visual template for easier guidance.
