Fishbowl
The Fishbowl method creates a focused environment for active listening and observation. It encourages deeper understanding by alternating participants between discussion and observation roles, fostering empathy and insightful feedback.
Use this method when you need to foster better listening skills, encourage diverse perspectives, and create a safe space for stakeholders to understand each other's viewpoints before engaging in collaborative problem-solving or decision-making.
Solves: Stakeholders not listening to each other, lack of understanding of different perspectives, superficial conversations.
- 1
Step 1: Prepare a discussion topic and related questions. (10 minutes)
- 2
Step 2: Arrange chairs in two concentric circles: inner circle for 'players' (discussants), outer circle for 'observers'. (5 minutes)
- 3
Step 3: Divide participants into 'players' and 'observers', providing observers with a handout to record observations. (5 minutes)
- 4
Step 4: Players discuss the topic for 15 minutes, guided by the facilitator's questions, while observers actively listen and record key points.
- 5
Step 5: After 15 minutes, switch roles between players and observers and repeat the discussion, potentially on the same or a related topic. (20 minutes)
- 6
Step 6: Facilitate a debrief where observers share their insights and experiences from both roles. (10 minutes)
- Emphasize the importance of active listening for observers.
- Encourage observers to focus on both content and process of the discussion.
- Provide clear instructions and time limits for each round.
- Use a 'hot seat' approach where observers can temporarily replace a player in the inner circle to offer a different perspective.
- Introduce a specific observation focus, such as body language or emotional tone.
