History Map
The History Map helps teams reflect on their shared journey, creating a collective narrative of their experiences. It's a powerful way to reinforce learnings, celebrate achievements, and foster a sense of closure at the end of a project or program.
Use this method at the conclusion of a project, program, or significant team milestone to facilitate reflection, acknowledge accomplishments, and strengthen team bonds.
Solves: Lack of shared understanding of project history, difficulty recognizing collective achievements, absence of closure after a long project.
- 1
Step 1: Prepare a large timeline (physical or digital) representing the project's duration, including key dates and events. (15 minutes)
- 2
Step 2: Invite participants to add their individual experiences to the timeline, including highlights, lowlights, insights, and emotions, using drawings, images, or text. (30-45 minutes)
- 3
Step 3: Allow participants to silently reflect on the completed timeline, considering the most significant moments for them personally. (5-10 minutes)
- 4
Step 4: Have each participant, in turn, mark their most important moment on the timeline (e.g., with a candle or digital icon) and briefly explain its significance. (20-30 minutes)
- Encourage participants to be honest and vulnerable in sharing their experiences.
- Create a safe and supportive environment for reflection.
- Adjust the timeline's granularity based on the project's complexity and duration.
- Use different colored markers to represent different types of experiences (e.g., successes, challenges, learnings).
- Focus the reflection on a specific theme or aspect of the project.
- Have participants write individual reflections before creating the shared timeline.
