Image Theatre
People respond to a theme by making frozen body sculptures, alone or together, without talking. The group then builds a combined image, reads it, and brings it to life with a thought, a sound or a small movement. Because no one has lines to learn, people who would never do a role play will often take part.
Use on an offsite to surface how people experience a situation, such as 'how change feels here', without asking them to say it in words first.
Solves: When asked to talk about team culture, people give the official version; what they actually feel stays unsaid.
- 1
Step 1: Warm up with a few silent movement exercises (10 min).
- 2
Step 2: Name a theme. Everyone makes a quick still image of it with their body, without thinking or talking (2 min).
- 3
Step 3: Invite a few people to remake their image in the centre; others add themselves one by one to build a group image (5-10 min).
- 4
Step 4: The audience describes what they see, then what they think it means (5-10 min).
- 5
Step 5: Bring the image to life: tap shoulders to hear each figure's thought, or add a sound and a small repeated movement (5-10 min).
- 6
Step 6: Ask the group to reshape the image into how they would like it to be, and talk about what had to change (10-15 min).
- Keep it silent while images are built. Talking turns it into charades.
- Ask what people see before what it means, so readings stay grounded.
- Real and ideal images: build the situation now, then the ideal, then the transition between them.
