Looking Around
A quick physical activity that challenges participants to break habitual patterns of movement. It serves as a powerful metaphor for the necessity of unlearning old habits to make room for new concepts.
To physically engage participants and introduce the concept of cognitive flexibility at the start of a learning session.
Solves: Mental rigidity or participants being stuck in 'autopilot' mode.
- 1
Step 1: Ask all participants to stand up (if able) and face their cameras (1 min).
- 2
Step 2: Lead the group through a series of simple physical commands (e.g., 'Look left, look right') (2 mins).
- 3
Step 3: Introduce a 'rule break' where participants must do the opposite of the command or a new movement entirely (3 mins).
- 4
Step 4: Briefly debrief how it felt to fight the urge to follow the old pattern (2 mins).
- Keep the pace fast to prevent overthinking.
- Model the movements clearly so participants feel safe being silly.
- Use 'Simon Says' style rules to increase the difficulty.
