Mirror Walk

In silent pairs, one person walks with eyes closed while the other leads them to things to touch, smell and hear. Every so often the guide turns the partner's head like a camera and says 'Open your eyes and look in the mirror'. The walker looks for a moment, then closes their eyes again. Pairs swap roles halfway and then share in fours.

When to Use

Use at the start of an outdoor day or retreat to slow people down, sharpen their senses and build trust between partners who do not know each other well.

How It Works

Solves: Groups arrive at a beautiful venue still in laptop mode and walk past everything that place could offer them.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Explain the walk, the 'mirror' phrase, and that it happens in silence. Ask about any need not to be touched (5 min).

  2. 2

Step 2: First round: guides lead their partner by the arm, offering textures, smells and sounds, with three or four 'mirror' moments (12 min).

  3. 3

Step 3: Give an audible signal and swap roles for the same length (12 min).

  4. 4

Step 4: Each pair joins another pair to talk about the experience (10 min).

  5. 5

Step 5: Optional whole-group round: what did you notice, what surprised you? (5 min)

Facilitator Tips
  • Agree touch boundaries before people pair up, and let anyone keep eyes half-open if closing them feels unsafe.
  • Walk the route first. Avoid steps, roots and slopes, and give guides a clear boundary.
  • In a city, a street with a single tree or a small park is enough.
Variations
  • Camera game (Joseph Cornell, Sharing Nature): the guide 'takes three photos' by tapping the shoulder; the walker later draws one.
