Movement Break

Two to ten minutes of deliberate physical movement between two cognitively heavy segments. Not a game, not a team-building exercise. A reset, so the next hour is not run on a body that has been seated for three.

When to Use

Use between two demanding segments, especially before work that requires honesty rather than analysis.

How It Works

Solves: Long seated sessions degrade the quality of the thinking in the second half, and nobody names it.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Name it as a reset, not a game. Adults resist forced fun and accept a reset (1 min).

  2. 2

Step 2: Stand. Move. Walk the room, stretch, change seats, or step outside (3-6 min).

  3. 3

Step 3: Return and start the next segment immediately, without recapping.

Facilitator Tips
  • Change where people sit; the new neighbour matters more than the stretch.
  • Offer a seated variation without asking who needs it.
  • Online, ask people to stand and turn cameras off for three minutes.
