Paradigm Shift
Paradigm Shift is a quick and intriguing exercise that demonstrates how perspective can dramatically alter our perception of reality. It uses simple hand movements to create a memorable metaphor for challenging assumptions and embracing new ways of thinking.
Use this activity at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to create a shared experience that highlights the importance of considering different viewpoints and being open to new ideas.
Solves: Resistance to new ideas, lack of awareness of personal biases, difficulty seeing alternative solutions.
- 1
Step 1: Invite participants to look at the ceiling and imagine a clock face. (10 seconds)
- 2
Step 2: Instruct everyone to extend their pointer finger towards the 12 o'clock position, palm facing them. (10 seconds)
- 3
Step 3: Ask them to slowly move their finger in a clockwise direction, forming a large circle above their head. (20 seconds)
- 4
Step 4: Continue the clockwise motion while slowly lowering their hand below shoulder height. (30 seconds)
- 5
Step 5: Repeat the rotation several times, observing the direction of movement. Participants should notice the perceived change in direction. (30 seconds)
- 6
Step 6: Facilitate a brief reflection on why the direction appears to change.
- Emphasize the importance of maintaining a consistent plane of rotation as the hand is lowered.
- Encourage participants to verbalize what they are observing.
- Have participants perform the exercise with their eyes closed and then discuss how the experience differs.
- Use the exercise as a lead-in to a discussion about specific situations where shifting perspective can be beneficial.
