Positive Gossiping

Positive Gossiping fosters personal growth and openness within a group by having members share their development journeys, receive appreciative feedback while they listen, and then reflect on what they heard. This method builds confidence and encourages a supportive environment for sharing experiences and challenges.

When to Use

Use this method when you want to create a safe space for vulnerability, encourage constructive feedback, and help individuals recognize their strengths and areas for growth within a team or learning environment.

How It Works

Solves: Lack of constructive feedback, fear of vulnerability, difficulty recognizing personal strengths, negative team dynamics.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: (Before Session) Ask students to prepare a 5-minute presentation using a metaphor to describe their personal development journey. (Preparation: 2 hours)

  2. 2

Step 2: Form groups of 3-4 students. Each student presents their metaphor, followed by clarifying questions from peers. (7 minutes per student)

  3. 3

Step 3: The presenter turns their back to the group. The group engages in a 5-minute positive conversation about the presenter's personal development, focusing on positive aspects. (6 minutes per student)

  4. 4

Step 4: The presenter rejoins the group and reflects for one minute on what stood out from the conversation. (1 minute per student)

  5. 5

Step 5: The presenter identifies behaviors instrumental in their growth, documented on a flip chart. Group members add observed effective behaviors. (10 minutes per student)

  6. 6

Step 6: The group extracts patterns or conditions supporting personal growth and adds them to the flip chart. Each student reflects on key insights. (7 minutes per student)

Facilitator Tips
  • Emphasize the importance of positive and uplifting conversation during the 'gossiping' phase.
  • Ensure students understand the assessment criteria for peer feedback.
Variations
  • Allow the presenter to choose whether or not they want to turn their back during the 'gossiping' phase.
  • Use a structured feedback form instead of open conversation.
