Restorative Dialogue
Restorative Dialogue facilitates a structured conversation following a 'hot moment' (a conflictual situation) to foster understanding and repair relationships. By exploring individual perspectives and underlying values, participants can rebuild trust and create a more inclusive environment.
Use this method when a conflict or emotionally charged situation has disrupted a group's dynamics and you want to facilitate a constructive process for understanding different perspectives and restoring a sense of safety and connection.
Solves: Tension and unresolved conflict after a heated discussion, hindering collaboration and creating a hostile environment.
- 1
Step 1: Recap the 'Hot Moment' (5 mins). Define a 'hot moment' and emphasize the importance of reflection for creating a safe learning environment. Briefly and factually describe the background, situation, feelings, and actions observed, avoiding judgments.
- 2
Step 2: Individual Introspection (10 mins). Have each participant reflect individually on the 'hot moment' using keywords to answer: What did you feel? What did you think? What principle/value was at stake? What did you do/not do?
- 3
Step 3: Collect and Share Perspectives (20 mins). Gather responses using an online tool (e.g., Mentimeter) or a flipchart. Display the data in a matrix (Feeling, Thought, Principle/Value, Act) for all to see. Observe the variety of perspectives without focusing on individuals directly involved.

Step 4: Restorative Dialogue (20 mins). Reiterate the session's objectives: learning and restoration, not winning. Introduce attitudes for dialogue (wonder, empathy, courage, curiosity, tolerating the not-knowing, etc.). Facilitate a discussion, starting with neutral perspectives, and encourage active listening and clarifying questions.

Step 5: Collective Reflection (5 mins). Allow those involved in the 'hot moment' to share their perspectives without defensiveness. Summarize key insights and lessons learned. Thank participants for their openness.
- Maintain a neutral, mediating role throughout the dialogue.
- Regularly summarize what has been said to ensure understanding.
- Remind participants of the attitudes needed for a fruitful dialogue.
- Use a talking stick to ensure everyone has a chance to speak uninterrupted.
- Incorporate a brief mindfulness exercise to help participants center themselves before the dialogue.
