River of Life

Each person draws their life, career or experience of a project as a river. Rocks, rapids and crocodiles mark hard times; calm water, fish and flowers mark good ones; tributaries show people and events that joined the flow. Everyone then tells the story of their river without interruption, and the group looks for shared influences and turning points.

When to Use

Use early on a retreat when a team or cohort needs to understand each other's backgrounds and what shaped them.

How It Works

Solves: Colleagues work together for years knowing each other's job titles but not what brought them here.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Explain the metaphor and show a simple example river, ideally your own (5 min).

  2. 2

Step 2: Everyone draws their river on flipchart paper, using symbols for good and hard times (20-30 min).

  3. 3

Step 3: One at a time, each person presents their river while others listen without interrupting (5-8 min each).

  4. 4

Step 4: After each river, the group may ask a few gentle questions (2-3 min each).

  5. 5

Step 5: As a group, name common influences, challenges and turning points across the rivers (10-15 min).

Facilitator Tips
  • Keep groups to eight at most; run several groups in parallel if needed.
  • Let people choose the scope, such as whole life or working life, and how much to share.
  • Outdoors, people can lay their river out on the ground with found objects.
Variations
  • Project river: map the team's shared journey through a project instead of personal lives.
