Skills Swap Sessions
A peer-led learning forum where team members take turns teaching a non-work-related skill to their colleagues. This validates individual expertise outside of job descriptions and builds mutual respect through vulnerability and teaching.
To encourage a culture of continuous learning and recognize the 'whole person' beyond their technical role.
Solves: Siloed expertise and a lack of personal growth opportunities within the daily workflow.
- 1
Step 1: Create a sign-up sheet for 'Lightning Lessons' (10-15 mins each) (Pre-work).
- 2
Step 2: The presenter shares their screen or uses their camera to demonstrate a skill (e.g., Excel shortcuts, sourdough baking, or basic coding) (15 mins).
- 3
Step 3: Conduct a brief Q&A session for the group to engage with the 'expert' (5 mins).
- 4
Step 4: Reflect on how the skill might be applied or simply appreciate the new knowledge (5 mins).
- Keep the topics light and diverse to ensure high engagement.
- Record these sessions so new hires can watch them as part of their onboarding to the team culture.
- Problem-Solving Swap: Instead of a skill, someone brings a challenge they solved and walks the team through their logic.
