The Anti-Problem
The Anti-Problem helps teams unlock creative solutions by reframing a challenge as its opposite. By exploring how to make the problem *worse*, participants can identify hidden assumptions and generate novel approaches.
Use this method when a team is stuck in a rut and struggling to find new solutions to a persistent problem. It's particularly effective when conventional approaches have failed.
Solves: Lack of creative ideas, Sticking to conventional thinking, Unclear problem definition
- 1
Step 1: (5 min) Introduce the problem the team is trying to solve. Clearly articulate the challenge.
- 2
Step 2: (5 min) Reframe the problem as its opposite – the 'anti-problem'. Encourage participants to make it as extreme as possible.
- 3
Step 3: (15-20 min) In small groups, brainstorm ways to make the anti-problem a reality. Encourage quantity over quality and embrace outlandish ideas.
- 4
Step 4: (10 min) Each group shares their anti-solutions with the larger group, explaining their reasoning.
- 5
Step 5: (5 min) Facilitate a discussion about the insights gained and how they might inform solutions to the original problem.
- Encourage participants to be playful and think outside the box.
- Emphasize that there are no wrong answers during the brainstorming phase.
- Help the team translate the insights from the anti-solutions into actionable ideas for the original problem.
- Introduce a list of smaller problems and make it a race to come up with as many anti-solutions as possible.
- Use different brainstorming techniques, such as mind mapping or SCAMPER, to generate anti-solutions.
