The Milling
People walk briskly through an open space as if on a busy street, then slow down and start noticing each other. At each signal they stop with whoever is nearest for a short, mostly silent encounter guided by the facilitator's words, such as recognising that this person also chose to face hard realities. They then mill again and meet someone new.
Use early in a gathering, outdoors on a lawn or in a large room, when people need to see each other as people before they work on something difficult together.
Solves: Participants sit side by side for a whole day and still treat each other as job titles.
- 1
Step 1: Clear the space and check consent for light touch (holding hands, palm to palm). Offer a no-touch option such as a nod (3 min).
- 2
Step 2: Ask people to mill fast, as in a busy city, then gradually slow and notice others (3 min).
- 3
Step 3: First encounter: stop with one person, look at them, and hear the facilitator's short framing (2 min).
- 4
Step 4: Mill again and repeat for three to five further encounters with new partners, each with a different framing (10 min).
- 5
Step 5: End with the last partner and give them a minute to say a few words to each other (3 min).
- Read the encounter texts slowly and leave silence after each one.
- Touch is optional; say so clearly and model a no-touch greeting so nobody feels singled out.
- On grass or uneven ground, slow the fast-walking phase so nobody trips.
- Online version exists on the Work That Reconnects site, using gallery view and breakout pairs.
