Truth Mandala
People sit close together in a circle around four quadrants, each holding an object: a stone for fear, dead leaves for sorrow, a stick for anger, an empty bowl for emptiness or need. Anyone can step into the centre, pick up an object and say what is true for them. The group answers each speaker with 'I hear you'.
Use when a group carries shared fear, grief or anger about something larger than itself (climate, a restructuring, a crisis in its field) and that feeling is blocking clear work.
Solves: Teams keep acting 'fine' about something that is clearly hurting them, and the unspoken weight shows up as cynicism and stalled decisions.
- 1
Step 1: Before people arrive, lay out the circle and place the four objects plus a centre cushion (20 min).
- 2
Step 2: Explain each object and the guidelines: one person at a time, brief, no cross-talk, confidentiality, 'I hear you' after each speaker (10 min).
- 3
Step 3: Open the mandala. People enter when moved, hold an object, speak, and return to the circle (45-60 min).
- 4
Step 4: When the energy settles, name what each object also stands for: fear and courage, sorrow and love, anger and justice, emptiness and room for the new (5 min).
- 5
Step 5: Close with a shared sound or three bows (to the earth, to yourself, to each other) and a pause before any break (5 min).
- Place it in the middle of a programme, not at the end, and plan quiet time or a walk straight after.
- Remind the group not to rush in with comfort or tissues; being heard is the point.
- Outdoors it works well in a sheltered clearing, but check people can hear each other above wind and traffic.
- Smaller groups can work with only two objects (stone and leaves) and a shorter time.
