When to Use

Use this method at the beginning of a workshop or meeting to energize a large group, encourage active participation, and create a lighthearted atmosphere.

How It Works

Solves: Low energy levels in a large group, difficulty engaging participants, lack of initial connection among attendees.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Introduce the activity and explain the concept of building a rainstorm with sounds. (2 minutes)

  2. 2

Step 2: Model each sound and corresponding action (rubbing hands, snapping fingers, clapping hands, hitting legs/thighs, jumping). (3 minutes)

  3. 3

Step 3: Divide the group into subgroups (optional). Assign each subgroup a sound, or have the whole group perform each sound together. (2 minutes)

  4. 4

Step 4: Conduct the 'storm' by pointing to each subgroup (or cueing the whole group) to create the sounds in sequence, building up to the peak of the storm and then calming it down. (8-10 minutes)

  5. 5

Step 5: Conclude with applause for the group's collective effort. (1 minute)

Facilitator Tips
  • Practice the sequence of sounds and actions beforehand.
  • Use clear and expressive gestures to guide the group.
  • Adjust the pace and intensity of the storm based on the group's energy levels.
Variations
  • Use different weather phenomena (e.g., wind, snow) or other soundscapes (e.g., a forest, a city).
  • Incorporate movement and gestures beyond just sound.
