Behaviour Change Wheel
The Behaviour Change Wheel is a structured method for identifying obstacles to a desired behavior and generating targeted interventions. By systematically analyzing capability, opportunity, and motivation, it helps teams design effective solutions for behavior change challenges.
Use this method when you need to understand the underlying reasons why a specific behavior isn't happening and to develop interventions that address those root causes. It's particularly useful when dealing with complex behavior change challenges in service design or organizational development.
Solves: Lack of understanding of why people are not behaving in a desired way; generating ineffective or generic interventions.
- 1
Step 1: Define the target behavior clearly. (5 minutes)
- 2
Step 2: Analyze the behavior using the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation). Break down each component into sub-categories. (30 minutes)
- 3
Step 3: Identify specific blockers related to each category and sub-category, based on research and insights. (30 minutes)
- 4
Step 4: Brainstorm design interventions to address each blocker. (45 minutes)
- Encourage participants to be specific when identifying blockers.
- Use real-world examples to illustrate the COM-B model components.
- Remind participants to consider all three components (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation) equally.
- Use the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) for a more detailed analysis of behavioral determinants.
- Prioritize blockers based on their impact and feasibility before generating interventions.
