Cultural Tensions Canvas
The Cultural Tensions Canvas helps teams identify and address underlying tensions that impact performance. By mapping emotions, mindsets, and behaviors, teams can align on current challenges and prioritize solutions for improved productivity and a healthier culture.
Use this method when a team is experiencing persistent conflict, low morale, or stagnation. It's particularly useful for uncovering hidden issues and fostering open dialogue about sensitive topics.
Solves: Unresolved team conflict, hidden resentments, lack of psychological safety, unclear expectations
- 1
Step 1: Individual Reflection (10 minutes): Each participant silently brainstorms and captures their thoughts on sticky notes for each section of the canvas (Emotions, Mindsets, Behaviors, Outcomes).
- 2
Step 2: Sharing and Clustering (30 minutes): One by one, participants share their sticky notes, placing them on a large, shared canvas (physical or digital). The facilitator guides the group to cluster similar thoughts and identify common themes.
- 3
Step 3: Tension Identification and Reframing (20 minutes): The team reviews the clustered notes to identify key tensions and contradictions. The facilitator guides a discussion to reframe the initial problem based on the insights gained.
- 4
Step 4: Action Planning (30 minutes): Based on the reframed problem, the team brainstorms actionable steps to address the identified tensions. Prioritize these steps and assign owners for each action item.
- Emphasize psychological safety and encourage participants to be open and honest.
- Clarify the difference between emotions, mindsets, and behaviors to ensure everyone is on the same page.
- Actively listen and guide the discussion without imposing your own opinions.
- Encourage the team to focus on solutions and actionable steps rather than dwelling on problems.
- Use the Culture Experiment Canvas (mentioned in the source article) to prototype and test potential solutions after completing the Cultural Tensions Canvas.
- Adapt the canvas to focus on specific areas of tension, such as communication, decision-making, or innovation.
