Design Thinking Modes Exploration
This method introduces participants to the five core modes of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) and encourages them to explore how these modes can be applied to a specific challenge. It's effective for building a foundational understanding of the design thinking process and fostering a mindset of iterative problem-solving.
Use this method at the beginning of a design thinking workshop or project to familiarize participants with the core principles and stages of the process.
Solves: Lack of shared understanding of the design thinking process, teams jumping to solutions without proper problem definition.
- 1
Step 1: Briefly introduce the five modes of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test). (5 minutes)
- 2
Step 2: Divide participants into smaller groups and assign each group one or more modes to explore. (5 minutes)
- 3
Step 3: Each group discusses what the assigned mode entails, its importance, and how it can be applied to the current challenge. (15 minutes)
- 4
Step 4: Each group shares their insights with the larger group. (20 minutes)
- 5
Step 5: Facilitate a discussion on how the five modes are interconnected and how they can be used iteratively. (15 minutes)
- Encourage participants to share real-world examples of how they have used or seen these modes applied.
- Emphasize the iterative nature of the design thinking process.
- Assign different challenges to each group to explore the modes in different contexts.
- Use visual aids or case studies to illustrate each mode.
