When to Use

Use this method when you need to gain a nuanced understanding of a community's challenges and opportunities from an insider's perspective, particularly when designing solutions for complex social issues.

How It Works

Solves: Superficial understanding of community needs, designing solutions that don't resonate with the target audience, lack of buy-in from community members.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Identify Locations and Actors (60 min). Individually brainstorm key locations, relevant actors, and existing assumptions related to the project's theme. Then, collaboratively synthesize these individual insights into a shared written document.

  2. 2

Step 2: First Sense (60-120 min). Conduct initial site visits, either individually or in teams, focusing on casual observation and engagement without specific research goals. Suspend judgment and avoid formal research methods.

  3. 3

Step 3: Participant Observation (120 min). Plan and execute further site visits with the intention of actively participating in daily life. Volunteer, initiate activities, or join existing initiatives to spend time with people of interest. Document observations and experiences in a field journal.

  4. 4

Step 4: How Might We (30 min). As a team, discuss the challenges and needs of local actors, and how public well-being can be served. Synthesize insights into an action-oriented 'How Might We' question.

  5. 5

Step 5: Organizing for Action (30 min). Identify actors and stakeholders willing to actively participate in addressing the identified community needs. Consider different levels of involvement for each actor.
