Problem Space Mapping

Problem Space Mapping helps teams explore the multifaceted dimensions of a problem by analyzing it across data, technology, product, experience, system, and implication layers. This method fosters a holistic understanding of the problem landscape, revealing potential design intervention points and their interconnectedness.

When to Use

Use this method when you need to gain a comprehensive understanding of a complex problem, identify potential design opportunities across different layers, and consider the broader implications of potential solutions.

How It Works

Solves: Narrow problem framing, overlooking systemic impacts, lack of innovative solutions

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Introduce the Problem Space Map and its layers (Data, Tech, Product, Experience, System, Implications). (5 minutes)

  2. 2

Step 2: Individually, participants brainstorm how the chosen topic manifests in each layer, writing each idea on a sticky note. Encourage diverse perspectives and past, present, and future considerations. (20 minutes)

  3. 3

Step 3: Participants populate the map by placing their sticky notes in the corresponding layers. (5 minutes)

  4. 4

Step 4: Facilitate a group discussion to reflect on the populated map, identifying potential design opportunities, unexpected connections, and concerning implications. (10-15 minutes)

Facilitator Tips
  • Encourage participants to think broadly and creatively about each layer.
  • Remind participants that there are no right or wrong answers, and all ideas are welcome.
Variations
  • Focus on a specific layer to dive deeper into that area.
  • Use different colored sticky notes to represent different perspectives or stakeholders.
