The 4E Model

The 4E Model guides participants through a structured process of exploring, engaging, elaborating, and evaluating complex issues, particularly those related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It fosters systemic thinking and collaborative action towards creating societal value.

When to Use

Use this model when you need a structured approach to address complex, interconnected problems, especially when aiming to shift participants from solution-oriented thinking to a more holistic, values-driven perspective.

How It Works

Solves: Groups struggling with 'analysis paralysis' or getting stuck in traditional problem-solving approaches that don't address the root causes of complex issues.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to facilitate this method
  1. 1

Step 1: Setting the Scene (15 mins) - Introduce a complex question or issue related to the SDG agenda. Ensure it's a 'wicked problem' without simple solutions.

  2. 2

Step 2: Exploring (45 mins) - Participants reflect on the chosen question, identify causes and consequences, and map relationships between them using sticky notes and arrows. Focus on a specific part of the system.

  3. 3

Step 3: Engaging (15 mins) - Identify diverse stakeholders who can influence the issue, considering both positive and negative actors. Map these stakeholders and their potential roles.

  4. 4

Step 4: Elaborating (30 mins) - Define specific, actionable steps each stakeholder can take to create positive change. Consider short-term, mid-term, and long-term actions.

  5. 5

Step 5: Evaluating (15 mins) - Imagine the actions have been implemented and assess the impact on the issue, focusing on the 5Ps of the SDGs: People, Planet, Profit, Peace, and Partnerships. Vote on the values created.

Facilitator Tips
  • Emphasize the importance of individual reflection before group discussion in each phase.
  • Encourage participants to think beyond traditional solutions and consider the interconnectedness of the system.
Variations
  • Allow for a second round of the model to refine actions based on the initial evaluation.
  • Use different frameworks for evaluating societal value beyond the 5Ps.
